Time: 6:30-9:30pm (12 hours)
In this 4 week (12 hour total) course you will learn basic carving techniques using a rotary carving tool to carve and texture a small bison skull. This workshop is perfect for carvers of any skill level, including beginner carvers. You'll start with a bandsawn basswood blank and Cam will guide you through each step to complete your project. Most of the skills you'll learn and practice will be useful for many other carving projects.
You will learn how to use a micromotor rotary tool and the various bits and cutters available for them. Carving, sanding and texturing techniques with the micromotor as well as a small amount of woodburning for details will be covered.
The Maple and Bass classroom is a fully-equipped workspace, providing each student with a workstation complete with all the necessary high-quality tools and equipment to finish your project. There's no need to bring your own tools, even if you own them.
The course fee of $135.00 is all-inclusive, covering a bandsawn blank and the use of tools and supplies as required. The only thing you need to bring is your desire to carve and learn!
Cam Merkle, the proprietor of Maple and Bass Enterprises, holds the distinction of being Saskatchewan's sole Wildfowl Master Artist. With a teaching career in bird carving that began in 1984, Cam has served as an instructor, judge, and competitor with his carvings at various shows and events across North America. A passionate bird watcher and photographer, Cam has authored over 40 photo reference books and two pattern and photo books, with additional titles forthcoming.
